Army Maj. Brian M. Mescall died Jan. 9 in Jaldak, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Also killed were Spc. Joseph M. Hernandez and Spc. Jason R. Parsons.

Thank you for your loyalty and service to our country. We are the land of the free because of you. May God bless you and welcome you home into eternal life. My cousin Joseph was with you and I am honored to know that he left this earth in the best of company. Enjoy your new life in heaven. You truly deserve. I will be attending a mass intention tomorrow for my cousin Joseph and will also keep you and Jason in my prayers. May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ watch over your family and provide them with peace in comfort.
