Joe [James Joe] was dedicated to kids and geographical learning. He was a friend of education and teachers. He will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of working with him. He was fun-loving and adventuresome. Thanks, dear friend, and God be with you.

I traveled with Joe in 1993 in Saudi Arabia. We were Malone fellows under the auspices of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations [in Washington] and our educational institutions. Joe and I traded "war stories" about our adventures traveling with students and teachers. Joe was dedicated to the belief that travel and cultural interaction promote understanding. How fortuitous that his final trip was with a group of teachers and students.
