Navy Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) John W. Faas died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down. Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) John W. Faas, 31, of Minneapolis enlisted in September 1999, the Navy said. Faas reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training at Coronado, Calif., in April 2000. He joined his East Coast-based SEAL team in July 2001.
