Navy Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) John W. Faas died Aug. 6 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when the CH-47 Chinook helicopter in which he was riding was shot down. Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) John W. Faas, 31, of Minneapolis enlisted in September 1999, the Navy said. Faas reported to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training at Coronado, Calif., in April 2000. He joined his East Coast-based SEAL team in July 2001. His decorations include three Bronze Star Medal with &lsquoV&rsquo device for valor Joint Service Commendation Medal with &lsquoV&rsquo device for valor Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal two Combat Action Ribbons Presidential Unit Citation Navy Unit Citation two Good Conduct Medals National Defense Service Medal three Afghanistan Campaign Medals three Iraq Campaign Medals Global War on Terrorism Service Medal three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons Rifle Marksmanship Medal and Pistol Marksmanship Medal.
