Army Staff Sgt. Michael L. Townes died Sept. 16 in Balad, Iraq, from a non-combat-related illness.

To Mike's family I send my deepest condolences. I was Mike's CHU mate in Taji. I was with him in his last days. I lost a brother and the army will never be the same without him. God Bless you Townes and may you rest in peace.

SSG Michael Townes was a great nco, and a great leader. I served with him at Camp Humphreys South Korea. He was like a brother to us. Never once did he lose his cool as an nco. I remember how he would ride his bicycle around post. My prayers and condolences to his family. He was a very loved soldier, and leader.
